Frequently Asked Questions

Weight Loss Surgery is a surgical procedure performed when all other weight reduction methods have failed. After surgery, patients can only eat small amounts. This means a lower calorie intake resulting in weight loss, but also a reduced absorption of nutrients. To supplement possible shortages and support your health, a daily multivitamin supplement is necessary.

There various weight loss operations, some are restriction operations and others are malabsorptive operations. Gastric Band and Sleeve Gastrectomy are considered as restrictive operations. These types of operations restrict and therefore reduce the amount food patients can eat. The malabsorptive operations reduce the amount of nutrients that are absorbed. These types of operations Include Gastric Bypass, Duodenal Switch or the Biliopancreatic Diversion.

Calcium is not included in the multivitamin because calcium decreases the absorption of iron. Iron is one of the ingredients in the multivitamin. In order to get enough calcium, it is important to take separate calcium supplements. The amount of calcium needed depends on the type or surgery. Above the calcium intake through food consumption, it is recommended to take 1500-2000 mg/day. Absorption is optimal when taking 500 mg at a time, as the body is unable to absorb more at once. That is why it is best to space out the dosages at least two hours apart. The calcium citrate in the FitForMe products is a form of calcium that is the least associated with negative side effects and can be taken with or without food.

After your operation you can only eat small amounts. This means a lower calorie intake resulting in weight loss, but also a reduced absorption of nutrients. To supplement possible shortages and support your health, a daily multivitamin supplement such as FitForMe is necessary. FitForMe supplements contain all the vitamins and minerals that you need for your daily intake.

The capsule is to be swallowed with a sip of water or a sugar-free drink while the chewable tablet can be chewed on its own.

The compositions are the same, with the exception that the chewable tablet does not contain iron. High dosages of iron have a very unpleasant taste and chewing on it can hurt. That is why the chew tablet is sold with a separate iron tablet. It is important to leave two hours between taking iron (either as separate tablet, or as part of the capsule) and the consumption or supplementation of calcium, because calcium decreases the absorption of iron.

The best time to take your FitForMe multivitamin is after lunch, dinner or just before bedtime. The best way to take your FitForMe Multivitamin capsule is with a sip of water or sugar-free drink. The FitForMe Multivitamin chewables are easy to chew. The Ferro tablet can also be taken with a sip of water or sugar-free drink.

Sometimes swallowing your capsules can be challenging so here are some suggestions that might help you out:

  1. You can take your capsule with water or other sugar-free drinks.
  2. Moisten the capsule in the mouth so that the outer layer does not stick. This way, the capsule slides more easily.
  3. When you swallow the capsule, it is best to place your chin to your chest instead of backward.
  4. Do not drink and eat large quantities immediately before, during and after taking the capsule. This way you avoid feeling nauseous.
  5. The capsule can be easily taken with the following foods and quantities: a sip of water or other sugar-free drinks or a tablespoon sugar-free fruit puree or other liquid foods.
  6. If you have trouble swallowing the capsule, you can also slide the capsule open and use only the content (in powder form) with the aforementioned liquid foods.
  7. We advise that you start your supplements when eating solid food confidently. Please discuss with your doctor or specialist first.
  8. If you are having trouble with your capsules, please contact FitForMe Customer Service and you can always try the Opti Chewables with a Ferro Tablet (Iron supplement).

The dark colour in your stool is generally caused by the high iron content in the multivitamins.

Store your FitForMe supplements in a cool and dry place away from sunlight. Do not store them next to the microwave or oven. Try not to open the jar too often and tightly close the lid after each use. If your supplements are in blister packs, don’t take them out of the packaging too long before use. Follow these guidelines to ensure your supplements remain fresh until the expiry date.

You need to take the multivitamin once a day. The FitForMe products are developed in such a way that just one capsule or chew tablet a day is sufficient to decrease the risk for developing deficiencies.

The capsule, or chew tablet with the separate iron tablet, should not be taken on an empty stomach, to prevent irritation of the stomach. Therefore, we advise you to take the capsule or chew tablet just after a meal. You may also take the capsule or chew tablet just before going to sleep.

You need to take the multivitamin for the rest of your life. The permanent changes to your body cause a decrease in absorption of vitamins and minerals. To decrease the risk of deficiencies, bariatric patients will need lifelong supplementation.

It is recommended to start taking the multivitamin two weeks before the surgery, to get used to taking the multivitamin. Your stomach and/or digestive system change after the surgery, and this can affect how well your body tolerates certain foods. It will be easier to continue taking your multivitamins if you have already started before your surgery. It is best to stop taking your multivitamins in the first two weeks after your surgery as your body still needs to get used to the new digestive system. After this break, you should re-start again.

Supplementation after a bariatric surgery is necessary because the surgery causes a decrease in the absorption of vitamins and minerals. The most important causes for malabsorption are:

  • Smaller stomach:
A stomach reduction causes you to eat less. However, it also means that your body absorbs less nutrients out of food.
  • Food intolerance:
This is a possible complication after the surgery. Some patients can no longer handle certain food such as red meat and dairy products, high in protein, vitamin B12, and iron.
  • Fewer/no production of gastric acid:
Gastric acid is responsible for retracting vitamins and minerals from your food.
  • Fewer/no production of intrinsic factor:
Intrinsic factor is a type of protein that transports vitamin B12 and enables its active absorption.
  • Bypass of the first section of the small intestine (this is not the case in Sleeve Gastrectomy):
The absorption of nutrients mostly takes place in the first section of the small intestine. However, in all bariatric surgeries (except for the Sleeve Gastrectomy) this section is bypassed. So, the vitamins and minerals no longer pass through the section where they are actively absorbed.

It is best to take the capsules with a sip of water or sugar-free drink. As a last resort, you can slide open the capsule and mix the contents with a sugar-free juice or anything else you like. You can easily chew the chew tablet. The ferro tablet, that should be taken together with the chew tablet, is best taken with a sip of water or sugar-free drink.

Calcium Forte and the Calcium Soft Chew are the same in composition. The difference between these two is the texture of the tablet; Calcium Soft Chew is a soft tablet, whereas Calcium Forte is a hard tablet. Calcium Plus is also a hard tablet, with a different composition, it contains half the amount of calcium, compared to the Calcium Forte and Calcium Soft Chew.

We have added Vitamin A to the WLS Maximum package, because people with a biliopancreatic diversion (with duodenal switch) need high amounts of vitamin A in their supplement, because absorption is decreased. This large dosage simply did not fit in the capsule. Furthermore, the maximum dosage in a food supplement is determined by the law in the Netherlands. A higher dosage in the capsule is not approved. That is why you receive a free additional Vitamin A tablet.

Preferably early in the morning, after physical activity, between in between meals or before going to sleep. Dissolve 30 grams of Pure Whey Protein in 200ml of skimmed or semi-skimmed milk or in water. For optimal results, mix the Whey Protein Shake with a shaker or blender.

Protein is important for maintaining strong bones and muscle building. Especially, when you lose a lot of weight very rapidly, in the first two years after surgery, it is important to lose fat tissue and not muscle tissue.

In consultation with your dietician, you can determine how many grams you need per day to optimally supplement your nutrition. This depends on your diet and the extent to which you exercise.

No, the Whey Protein contains lactose.

The most of our capsules are approximately 1 centimeter. With the exception of the Optimum and the Forte, these are approximately 10 mm.

Yes, it is very important to take additional iron. Even more so for premenopausal women as they lose iron during the menstruation. The form of iron in our multivitamin can be easily absorbed by the body.

There are several reasons why this is important:

  • You eat smaller portions, so your body absorbs less iron from food.
  • Some people experience food intolerance after surgery. If this is the case, it is most common with red meat (an important source of iron).
  • Gastric acid is necessary for the absorption of iron. It transforms iron from plant-based food into a form that is easier to absorb by the body. However, after a bariatric surgery there is little to no gastric acid. This means the body is less efficient in absorbing iron.

Once you become deficient on iron, it is very difficult to treat this and to maintain a steady blood serum level. So, prevention is key! Do not wait with iron supplementation until you have an iron deficiency.

It is important to leave two hours between taking iron (either as separate tablet, or as part of the capsule) and the consumption or supplementation of calcium, because calcium decreases the absorption of iron.

The chew tablet does not contain iron. High dosages of iron have a very unpleasant taste and chewing on it can hurt. That is why the chew tablet is sold with a separate iron tablet. Our multivitamin contains very high dosages of vitamins and minerals and some of these micronutrients are known to cause nausea in some people. That is why it is very important not to take the multivitamin on an empty stomach. Also taking the multivitamin together with some coffee might help, because of the acidity of coffee. Another reason for nausea may be that the stomach, esophagus and small intestine are still sensitive. A lot has changed in your body after the surgery, and some patients experience food intolerance to certain foods such as pasta and (red) meat. You can try taking the multivitamin right before going to sleep, this way you might not be bothered by the nausea. For some people it helps switching from capsule to chew, or vice versa.

With clinical studies we evaluate the efficacy and safety of our products, but we also pay great attention to customer experience. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our supplements and to improve the customer experience. Decreasing nausea complaints is something we give high priority to.
