Feeling nauseous after weight loss surgery? Discover what causes it and what you can do about it

Often nauseous after your stomach reduction? That is, of course, really uncomfortable. After all, you are relieved that the surgery is over, so you are not looking forward to nausea or vomiting. Unfortunately, it does happen. In this blog, we explain the possible reasons for nausea. And we offer tips to reduce or even prevent it.

Nauseous after taking multivitamins? The right intake is essential

Some people get nauseous after taking a WLS multivitamin. This can happen due to the sensitivity of your stomach, oesophagus or small intestine. Also, the high dose of vitamins and minerals is a possible cause. The time of intake, how you take multivitamins and the combination with food can also trigger nausea. Do know that we, at FitForMe, are constantly improving our multivitamins to reduce the risk of nausea and vomiting. Here's what you can do yourself:

Intake instructions

  • Make sure you have a full stomach: take the multivitamin with or immediately after lunch or dinner.
  • Take the multivitamin with the last bite of your meal.
  • Start taking multivitamins (again) only if you can eat solid food after surgery.
  • Try a different vitamin form: WLS Forte and WLS Optimum are available as capsule and chewable tablet.
  • Break the chewable tablet in half, take 1 part after lunch, the other half after dinner. Let the tablet dissolve in your mouth instead of chewing.

Moreover, it is always important teat small portions, chew your food well and don't drink at the same time.

Nausea caused by stomach reduction itself

Right after surgery, your body is in pain and your digestive system still sensitive. Also, the time spent under anaesthesia, medication and changes in your body can cause nausea. For most people, this will pass after a while.

Can food cause nausea?

Yes certainly. Some people may not tolerate certain foods well after surgery. Especially red meat, pasta and bread cause problems. Fortunately, food intolerance is often temporary. After surgery, you may also experience dumping. This means that food is dumped too quickly and in large chunks in the small intestine. Because it takes more effort for the small intestine to digest the food, you may become nauseous.

More tips to tackle nausea

Still nauseous after surgery or taking multivitamins? These tips will help reduce nausea:

  • Make fresh ginger, lemon or mint tea and drink slow, small sips.
  • Focus on your breathing and consciously take a couple of deep breaths in and out.
  • Get fresh air. Go outside and breathe deeply for about 10 minutes.
  • Find distraction so you don't think about the queasy feeling. For example, put on calming music.
