Weight-loss surgery

What you need to know

Before choosing weight-loss surgery, you want to know what to expect. We get that. That’s why we're here to help and share our knowledge with you.

What is weight-loss surgery?

Weight-loss surgery is a procedure to help with weight loss in cases of severe obesity. It can also decrease obesity-related physical symptoms. During surgery, the surgeon makes the stomach smaller. In some cases, the small intestine is bypassed. This results in being able to eat less and eat smaller portions, thus leading to weight loss. However, it also means that you ingest fewer nutrients from your meals.

In a Biliopancreatic Diversion-Duodenal Switch, usually, a 75- to 100-cm length of small intestine is retained.
