Frequently asked questions
Calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth. You need it every day. With weight loss surgery, you get less calcium. This is because you eat less and absorb fewer nutrients. Calcium Plus as a supplement to your diet replenishes a calcium deficiency. Exactly how much calcium you need is different for everyone. It depends, for example, on your operation and the amount of calcium-rich food you eat every day. Ask a dietitian what is best for you.
After a weight loss surgery, you will eat less and only in small portions. You will lose weight, but you will also absorb fewer nutrients. Vitamins and minerals are essential to feel good and energetic. This is true for every person, but it’s certainly true if you’ve had a weight loss surgery. Deficiencies can cause all sorts of health issues. Taking a multivitamin can help prevent or supplement deficiencies. Lifelong supplementation will keep your body strong and healthy.
In addition to calcium, iron is an important mineral that you need after weight loss surgery. That's why iron is often found in multivitamins. Calcium limits the absorption of iron. Therefore it is recommended not to take calcium together with a multivitamin. Also, your body is not able to absorb more than 500mg of calcium at a time. Dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt contain calcium. So take a calcium tablet separately, at least 2 hours before or after a multivitamin or dairy products.
