From black to colorful clothing

Interview with color stylist Jolanda

Did you know that many people wear black clothing because it feels safe and is flattering? But after a weight loss surgery you may want to wear color and be seen. Color stylist Jolanda tells us all about it in this blog.

After a weight loss surgery, your body changes enormously. You really feel like a new you. This probably also involves a different style of dressing up. But where do you actually start discovering what suits you?

To find out more about this, we spoke to Jolanda Moerings. Jolanda is a color stylist and founder of Kleurbewust, a company in the Netherlands. Kleurbewust offers advice to show your personal power more visibly through color. You can also go there for advice about style and feeling more confident.

Why is black a great clothing color?

Many people who are insecure about themselves wear black clothes. This is because black clothing often looks neat and does not stand out so much.

Jolanda: “We first perceive light colors, then the dark colors. So if you are dressed in all black, someone else will see your face first. That attracts attention. And that's nice if you prefer not to pay attention to the rest of your body.”

With black clothing you do not attract the attention of others, which is nice when you are insecure. And uncertainty is unfortunately something that many overweight people recognize. But how do you get a little more color in your wardrobe without having to completely step out of your comfort zone?

Other dark colors for variation

Black is not the only color that always looks flattering and feels safe. Actually, any dark color is perfect. For example, think of dark blue, dark green or gray. Actually, none of these dark colors immediately attract attention. But because it is a color, it already freshens you up. Just try it. You can immediately see that something is happening, even if it is just a different shade than just black.

Jolanda: “With dark colors you can easily add a little more color variation to your wardrobe. And of course you can still wear black if you want to. Just don't use it to hide yourself, but because you like the clothes themselves and feel good in them.”

Dark colors are therefore a nice first step for a little more color variation in your wardrobe, without immediately stepping out of your comfort zone.

Black clothing and prints

Do you really think black is a beautiful color? Then you can also play with black clothing with fun colored prints or motifs. Prints often attract a little more attention than a dark-colored garment without a print. So see what you feel comfortable with.

Which colors suit me?

Just a few months after your weight loss surgery, your body has already changed considerably. Who knows, you may also be a lot more confident in yourself and want to be seen. Then you can get started with color, because colors attract attention.

Which color suits you best depends, among other things, on your hair color, eye color and the undertone of your skin. Are they warm colors or cool? Or maybe you're somewhere in between?

Jolanda: “It is extremely difficult to determine for yourself which color tones you have and what really suits you as a total picture. There are so many combinations of skin, hair and eye colors. And what makes skin warm or cool? This actually requires tailor-made advice.”

Determining which specific colors suit you is very difficult to explain in a blog. What you can do yourself is the contrast method. With this method, you just take a photo of yourself, setting the camera to gray colors. You will then receive a black and white photo of yourself. Then you look at the contrasts between your face and your hair in the photo. Is there a high contrast in those colors or not?

  • High contrast, for example with light skin and very dark hair. Colors that are also high in contrast will suit you. Think of black together with white. Or dark blue with light blue.
  • Medium contrast, where colors that are close to each other fit well, such as a dark color with two lighter variants of that color. Green, gray and blue can often be found in different shades and can be beautifully combined with each other.
  • Low contrast, for example with light skin and blond hair. Light shades go very well with this. Pastel colors also look nice.

Jolanda: “By wearing different layers, such as a blouse with a jacket over it, you can bring out all the shades beautifully. And otherwise an accessory such as a bag can complete your outfit.”

Hopefully you can get started with these tips and discover for yourself which colors really suit you. Take your family member or best friend with you and try everything in that clothing store. And you don't have to immediately change your entire wardrobe and go completely from black to colorful. With a few nice shirts or jackets you can create endless beautiful clothing combinations.
