Feeling cold after a stomach reduction

Are you suddenly feeling cold after your stomach reduction? You're certainly not the only one! Many people experience sudden chills more often. In this blog, you'll read why this happens and what you can do about it.

How heat works in the body

When you move, your body needs energy. Your body gets this energy from sources like food. Producing this energy also releases heat, which helps keep you warm. To avoid getting too warm, your body releases extra heat through your skin.

Why are you feeling cold?

Do you have a lot of body fat? This fat acts like a blanket for your body, making it difficult to lose heat. It keeps you very warm. However, after a stomach reduction, you gradually lose this body fat. Your "blanket" becomes thinner, and your body can lose heat more easily.

Additionally, you can now eat less, so your body gets less food to convert into energy. Your body then conserves energy more efficiently. With less energy production, less heat is generated.

With less body fat and energy, you get cold faster—even if it's not very cold outside.

What can you do about the cold?

Your body is still getting used to your new stomach and the loss of body fat. Therefore, your body will be working hard to find a new balance. This process can take a few months to up to two years. After that, your body will be better balanced, and you will feel less cold.

In the meantime, help your body by dressing up warmly. Wear an extra thick sweater and warm, thick socks. Soup can also be very comforting. Here we have a recipe for celery soup and a recipe for broccoli soup.

Do you still feel cold? Some people remain sensitive to cold after their stomach reduction. We advise you to contact your doctor in that case.
