Do you need to hit the gym several times weekly to reach your health goals? We have news for you: you don't have to. Walking is one of the most effective, easiest, and healthiest exercise methods. Know why? This blog gives you 7 benefits of walking before and after WLS. Spoiler: it's not just the physical part we're excited about. So, get those boots on and hit the road!
The main reason we love walking is that you can do it safely and daily, either before or after WLS. Walking is gentle on the joints and therefore also great during recovery, when it is better not to do strenuous activities. Yet low-impact exercise still improves cardiovascular strength and circulation, reducing the risk of heart disease and cardiovascular conditions.
By walking you’ll burn calories and stimulate your metabolism, contributing to weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight after WLS. Try to walk daily for at least 30 minutes at a manageable pace, so your heart rate and breath are higher, but you are still able to talk. No need to aim for the famous 10,000 steps a day, although it's an exciting goal. 8,000 a day is a great start.
Regular walking can increase your energy levels, which reduces fatigue and boosts your well-being. As a result, you are more likely to sleep better, which has positive effects on your health and motivation to stay active. In fact, a good night’s sleep is one of the most important elements of a healthy life and maintaining a healthy weight.
While walking, you use different muscle groups, including the legs, glutes, core, abs, and back. As a result, you build strong muscles. You also strengthen your bones and cartilage, which is incredibly important for fitness and mobility. Want to challenge yourself and improve your bone and muscle condition even more? Choose trails with inclines and stairs if this is doable for you.
You will make your gut happy by exercising. And walking is one of the best ways to do that. Walking helps with digestion as it stimulates movement and blood flow to your bowels. Moreover, it helps prevent constipation, which often occurs after surgery due to changes in diet and your body. Walking also has a relaxing effect, which is essential for a healthy gut.
Besides the physical part, walking is great for your head space. It helps to calm your mind, let go of negative thoughts, or put them into perspective. By moving, you release endorphins, the body's natural mood boosters. This aids in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. And with a positive mood, it’s much easier to maintain an active lifestyle.
We all have busy lives and most of us spend a lot of time indoors and on screens. But we’d love to make time for a walk, right? Walks are perfect for spending time with loved ones. So, plan your next catch-up outside instead of at home or a coffee shop. We're sure being out and catching some sunlight (hello vitamin D!) will boost your mood and make room for good conversations.
After reading this blog, we hope you realize what a simple walk can do for your body and mind. Of course, you can still go to the gym if you enjoy it (read our 6 essential tips to start exercising after WLS here), but you don't necessarily have to.
